Chasing the Burning Skies

Slicing Through The 63rd day of Autumn 1937d3

“We have suffered a terrible ordeal, but as Pelor’s light shines upon us this day, we give thanks for our very lives. The Raven Queen has taken our brothers and daughters, our sons and mothers, our family and friends, we know that they are safe and at peace. The terrors of the night have passed, but we are a strong people, and we will persevere.”
                    Father Kayrel of 4th Crossing
                        After the Burning Skies
Everyone watches the river overtake the town as the first rays of morning light shine down. Urikka takes Talfryn, and the two scavenge through Faru’s ruined shop. They salvage some food and supplies for the townsfolk but little of real value. Some of the townsfolk begin to follow suit. Mithras sits in prayer with Father Kayrel and some townspeople. Chira speaks with Rowan about the strange events of the night. Lin slips off to the woods alone. After the prayers, Mithras speaks privately with Father Kayrel about the dreams that he has had, bit they are soon disturbed by Lin’s cries of help from the woods.
In the forest Lin looks at the old sword in her hands. She had seen it many times as a young girl in the old knight’s tomb, but now it was so strange. It hardly felt like steel, the amber and red whorls on the blade moved. She thought of her lost friend as she moved through her forms. The blade felt light and quick in her hands and with a swing she felt it bite into the air. A silver slice hung in the air before the forest beyond fell away like a curtain. A billow of heat and light broke through from the tempest that raged on the other side.
Somehow the blade sliced into the Elemental Chaos. Lin looked for a few moments and then a small beetle with brown and green markings skittered out of the passage. It moved toward her and spat a mass of viscous burning ichors all over her. She struck at it, but still it advanced. Another beetle, with blue and black markings came through and she yelled for help. A third insect with red markings came and she feared for her life as she tried to fight them all off.
Rowan heard the cry first, but soon everyone was running for the trees. There they found Lin in grave danger as the beetles swarmed her, but then a cyclone of flame came through and whirled around searing everyone with its heat. A galeb duhr came through and struck at the warriors as well. The six had a tough fight against the elemental beasts, but fortunately the portal closed soon and Father Kayrel’s late, but ultimate arrival allowed them to succeed.
The group returned to the chapel with Father Kayrel to discuss the sword and their next move. The father organized the townsfolk and sent them off to the nearby hamlets and farmsteads for aid. Everyone else discussed how best to study the sword. It was decided that after a rest they would all try again, together.
Around midday, Chira and Lin explored the forest looking for ritual components. Mithras aided Father Kayrel with the townsfolk. Talfyrn, Urikka, and Rowan went south to find a good place to experiment with the sword. In the late afternoon they all met up and traveled south to a small canyon in the hills. There they make camp and wait for the morning light.

Gathering at the Crossing / The Burning Skies The 62nd day of Autumn 1937d3

The 2nd of late-autumn was a cool but sunny day. The past week had been rainy and dreary, but the weather had turned. Linta Fimbrethil and her young companion Tenno walked into town near midday. After speaking with Father Kayrel and securing her horse and beds at the inn, she went south to seek out her friend Ajalaa who she had been seeking for sometime. Meanwhile, six other strangers were making their way toward 4th Crossing.
Along the Tradeway traveling east from Troll’s Bridge and Zel’Tabur, a trio of desperate and weary travelers walked. Priestess Chira Apeirogan and Brinion knight of Ioun escorted the sick and weary Mithras warrior of Pelor. Nearly two weeks before, Mithras had fallen ill from filth fever after helping Brinion and Chira fight off a group of wererats.
Farther east on the Tradeway, Rowan Ambronarian and Talfryn of Vacour, two companions who recently met over the fallen bodies of hobgoblins, wandered westward. They had little in common but for the camaraderie of survivors, but their hearts were light and the road was open before them.
Meanwhile, traveling southeast through the Whelp Wood, a lone Tiefling named Urikka seeks a place to hole up for the winter.
As the day wore on each of these people found themselves in 4th Crossing. Rowan and Talfryn explored the town and found their way to the local inn. Father Kayrel managed to heal the ailing Mithras, with Chira’s help, and they too found lodging at the inn. In time Chira and Rowan were deep in conversation about the ruins, and Lin overheard and spoke of her recent experiences. After a lengthy discussion Talfryn, Lin, Chira, Rowan, and Mithras decided to explore the chamber that Lin had seen earlier. Urikka explored 4th Crossing alone and spent some significant time in Faru’s (the Halfling merchant) shop.
Just south of the town center, the lost dragonborn warrior Ajalaa set up camp, just as the heavens told her to. Beneath her feet the five explorers found themselves in a buried chamber dedicated to all the varied gods. Searching a small antechamber they found a sanctuary to Corellon and the Magic Circle Ritual inscribed in the floor along with prayers and exultations of purity. Their exploration did not last long as a flock of stirges attacked the group. After a short battle the party decided to return to town to rest and discuss the oddity of the ruins.
Evening fell, and with it a meteor shower began streaking across the sky. Everyone was outside watching the heavens. At first there is a single star or two, then some small groups coming every few minutes or so. A little over a candlemark later (about an hour) the sky is fully dark and the show starts in earnest. The sky is filled with tiny streaks of light. Sometimes it is so dense you can hardy see the stars of the Astral Sea.
An eerie blue glow begins to appear in the sky, surrounded by the streaks of light.
People begin to look worried. The show begins to move from the mundane into the mystical. Some of the townsfolk begin to return to their homes. All of a sudden a massive fiery streak breaks through the amorphous glow. It shatters with a thunderous bang and seven fiery bolts fly across the sky. Three fly east beyond the horizon. One goes to each of the other three directions, south, west, and north. The last burning inferno powers into the ground at 4th Crossing throwing out a blast of light and heat and dust that shakes the very earth itself.
As the earth settled some people found themselves in some very strange places. Lin had seen Ajalaa staring up at the crashing meteor with open arms, and she awoke now on the edge of a crater of blasted earth. Chira and Mithras found themselves among the ancient trees of the Feywild while the woods whispered around them. Rowan and Talfryn found themselves in the Shadowfell, in the decayed mirror of the center of town. Urikka found herself alone in the Feywild, screams and cries of help echoed all around.
In the Shadowfell, Talfryn and Rowan found themselves defending a group of townsfolk. The strange energies from the meteor have caused the dead to wake and a horde of zombies converge on the town center. The two are easily able to keep the undead at bay, but a dark creeper comes by to taunt them, and it attempts to bargain for the souls of the townsfolk. Soon Talfryn sick of the creepers words and strikes him, and eventually slays him at the cost of some of the local’s lives.
Urikka sliced her way through the Feywild, calling for the others and hearing voices in return. Chira and Mithras find themselves matching wits with a seductive swarm of insects, but they eventually succumb to its power. Soon the three meet among the old trees and discuss their predicament. However, their discussion is interrupted by the attack of a fey panther that they quickly defeat.
Lin shakes the dirt off her and looks down into the crater where just moments ago her friend stood. She climbs down into the ruins and once again finds herself in the chapel of Corellon. Ajalaa’s body lays there, lifeless but unharmed, and the sword she had taken rests nearby wrapped in black and red flame. She takes up the blade, and it speaks to her in her friend’s voice. “When the seven sisters come to ground, fear and anguish alight unbound…Doors are opened, borders crossed, crossed again and old oaths lost” She composes her friends body to rest and begins the climb out.
In the center of town, banks of fog roll across the ground. With a sharp eye one could see through the fog and across the planes. The river has begun to flood the ruins and sinkholes have begun appearing all around the town. Lin makes her way to the chapel of Pelor and warns Father Kayrel of the impending doom. The two guide the survivors through the strange fog as the planar borders begin to recede. Talfryn and Rowan find the Shadowfell slowly slipping away as they are shunted into the Middle Realm (the real world). Urikka, Chira and Mithras also find themselves slipping out of the Feywild and into the chaos of the fleeing survivors and flooding town.
The five travelers also move to flee the destruction, when a crazed fey dragon bursts from the Feywild and attacks the townsfolk. Urikka, Talfryn, Mithras, Chira and Rowan surround the beast while Lin rushes back to help. Together they let the fleeing citizens escape and eventually slay the dragon. The six then flee across the river as the last of the town collapses leaving only the chapel standing.
